Issue #14 KEEP ABORTION ACCESSIBLE - INCLUDING RESOURCE LIST

KEEP ABORTION ACCESSIBLE. SPEAK UP AND SPEAK OUT.

QUICK QUIZ
True?

A. The Supreme Court is likely to overturn or drastically weaken Roe v. Wade with the result that abortion rights will be protected in less than half of US states and none of the US territories.

B. Anti-abortion ordinances, abortion bans, referred to as “sanctuary cities for the unborn,” have been passed in over 30 municipalities.

True, too true.

RE: ACTION

The leaked draft of a possible Supreme Court decision on the Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy shows that the Court seems poised to overturn or gut Roe v. Wade soon.
When this occurs, at least half the states are ready to ban or severely restrict abortion access. Indeed, some states have already done so. These restrictions will disproportionately harm people lacking the resources to travel to places where abortion is legal.
As Rebecca Solnit wrote in The Guardian, “Resist by remembering our power, strengthening our alliances, winning elections and keeping our eye on the prize.” Here’s what all of us need to do. (Additional information about the organizations supporting these actions is here.)

Protest. Across the country, thousands of people are demonstrating for reproductive justice. Many demonstrators wear green, echoing the panuelo verde (green bandana), which has emerged as the transnational symbol of the right to reproductive choice.
Contribute. The national, regional, and local organizations dedicated to abortion rights and services need all the support they can muster during this fraught time.
Donate. Abortion funds help people use abortion services where they are legal.
Share information. It is likely that your family and friends need to know more about medication abortions, which are especially valuable for people in “abortion deserts” (places far from abortion-providing facilities).
Go public with your views. Letting family, friends, and neighbors know where you stand will help them do the same.
Work for pro-choice candidates. The right to make one’s own pregnancy decisions is fundamental to democracy. At the federal, state, and local level, we need lawmakers who will protect reproductive choice.

As OWRS (Older Women Remember and Speak Out), we (Elayne Archer, Vicki Breitbart, Betsey McGee, Jini Tanenhaus, and Alice Radosh) write short emails with reliable information that you can use to start conversations and support others doing the same. Previous issues are available at Archive. Share these emails on social media. Ask friends, family and co-workers to go to OWRSpeakout.org and sign up.
